Two-Day Screen Business Essentials Workshop

Screen Producers Australia and AFTRS present the annual two-day Screen Business Essentials course which guides screen industry professionals through the key issues that can transform your production company into a thriving creative business.

Building a sustainable and progressive screen production business is a balancing act of hard business acumen and creative vision. We share the insights and instructional knowledge of the best minds in the screen industry over June 19th and 20th at Holding Redlich in Melbourne.

The course will be facilitated by SPA Commercial and Industrial Affairs Consultant Owen Johnston and feature special guest speakers from a range of disciplines. Leading screen start-up and entrepreneurial leadership specialist and producer Kylee Ingram will navigate the modes of adapting entrepreneurial skills into a creative production practice. Film Art Media's Executive Producer Sue Maslin will discuss the secrets of her success in an exclusive Q&A.

In an intensive two day course, attendees will access speakers and sessions including; lawyer Jenny Lalor of Lalor Law will lead the discussion on IP rights and management, Media Arts Lawyers' Sarah Woolcott will outline music rights management, Moneypenny's Jane Corden will give you the low down on how to manage production finance, Stephen Assimo, State Manager, Vic from Media Super will discuss superannuation, Kate Whitehead of Avant Group will discuss export assistance and grants, Screen Australia and Film Victoria will tell you how to prepare competitive applications and Screen Australia's Patrick May will delve into the latest industry intel and trends.

SPEAKERS

Sue Maslin is one of Australia's most successful film, television and digital content producers with a track record of creating award winning feature and documentary films. Her most recent is the smash hit The Dressmaker, starring Kate Winslet and Judy Davis. It grossed more than 20 million at the box office and garnered the highest number of nominations at the 2015 Australian Academy Awards, winning five including the coveted People's Choice Award for Favorite Australian Film.

Feature credits include Road To Nhill, winner of 2003 Best Feature Film at Thessaloniki International Film Festival; Japanese Story, winner of 2003 AFI Award for Best Feature Film, IF Award for Best Feature Film, Film Critics Circle of Australia Best Feature Film; Celebrity:Dominick Dunne; and Hunt Angels,winner of the 2006 AFI Award for Best Feature Documentary Film. Her innovative company, Film Art Media,produces and distributes screen content across many platforms with a focus on blue chip documentaries including The Edge of The Possible: Jorn Utzon and the Sydney Opera House, winner of the Golden Plaque at the Chicago International Television Competition.

Kylee is a digital content/television producer and entrepreneur. She has received global recognition for her interactive work.

Kylee has fifteen years of experience producing documentaries and media programs throughout Africa, Central Asia, Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. Kylee has produced content for all five free-to-air Australian broadcasters and her shows have been screened in over 100 countries to international audiences.

For the past five years her interactive projects have achieved outstanding international marketplace recognition. Kylee’s leadership in the cross-platform field has been recognized at XMedia Lab, iKids Awards, Sports Technology Awards (UK), Login Conference Venture Capital (USA), SXSW (USA) and includes two nominations at MIPTV Cube’s interactive awards (Cannes).

Kylee specializes in creating audience targeted digital properties, each designed with unique go-to-market plans and business models. She is able to work in a small team and adapt ideas quickly to suit different market spaces.

Kylee has recently returned from three and a half years in the US where she launched two apps and designed a reality TV/investment platform that takes advantage of the new non-accredited investment laws in the US - a platform that allows viewers to equity invest. 

Most recently Kylee has been appointed Entrepreneur in Residence at Southern Cross University’s Enterprise Lab. She has been tasked with building capacity around entrepreneurship in this part of regional Australia.

 

Jane Corden is CEO of Moneypenny, the leading Film, TV & Entertainment industry financial and accounting services company in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa and now with offices in the UK. Jane has worked side by side with film makers since 1983 and has been head of the Moneypenny Services group since 1988 growing the company from a supplier of experienced film production accountants to the “one stop financial shop” that it has become today providing services to all types of production large and small. Jane’s own film credits began with a mini-series A Fortunate Life in 1983 followed by many more and in recent times she went back out on location as Financial Controller on Anthony Minghella’s No 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

Currently Jane is based in Sydney but oversees operations in UK and SA.  Jane also spends up to four months a year travelling between film markets, festivals and Moneypenny offices in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK to support film makers in finding financial solutions.

Jane is also available to do international consulting to governments and regional offices with regard to the successful introduction of incentives and their interaction with co-productions, co-finanaced or location projects. Jane and her consulting team have provided reports to national and regional governments in Australia, South Africa, Botswana and Serbia and continue to research key structural issues for film producers who want to operate within today’s global environment.

Sarah is an entertainment lawyer at Media Arts Lawyers and has been working in the music industry for ten years. She was previously the head of Synchronisations Licensing at major record label, Warner Music Australia. She has negotiated deals with television networks, film producers and directors, advertising agencies, local and international artists and artist managers, music supervisors, music publishers and other record labels.

Jenny Lalor has been working in legal and business affairs in film and television for more years than she cares to admit.  Whilst living in London between 1990 and 2000, she worked for the BBC, Carlton Television and Tiger Aspect Productions (including on Billy Elliot and The Animated Mr. Bean).  Returning to Melbourne in late 2000, she has worked on a variety of film and television projects, including Jindabyne, Rise of the Eco Warriors, Crawlspace, Get Ace, RocKwiz, Wilfred, 52 Tuesdays, The Space Between.  She now has her own practice specializing in entertainment law and provides executive producing services on a range of projects, including The Space Between, Rise of the Eco Warriors, the indigenous animation series Little J & Big Cuz,  and the pre-school animation series “DirtGirlWorld”, winner of the 2013 Digital Program: Children and Young People International Emmy.  She was a Television Councillor on the Screen Producers Association of Australia for over five years, and is currently on the board of Open Channel. Her practice was the winner of the 2013 SPA Services and Facilities Business of the Year Award, and she was named as one of the most influential people in Australian television (The Age and SMH 28 September 2015).

Kate is founder and Managing Director of Avant Group. Her role sees her undertake major competitive grant applications and key project management for research and development activities, and other major project management activities. Kate oversees the company’s grants consulting team, who is charged with application identification, submission, management and auditing compliance.

Outside of her work Kate is a Director and Board Member of the Fight Cancer Foundation, a major Australian not for profit research organisation.

Kate holds a Masters in Marketing and a Post Graduate Diploma of Business Management from Melbourne Business School. Kate also holds qualifications in Engineering (Mech) and Business Management.

Stephen Assimo is Regional Manager Growth with Media Super. With almost 15 years’ experience working in the superannuation industry looking after employer and member interests, Stephen will be on hand to provide information on how businesses interact with superannuation, requirements and why Media Super is the fund for your industry.

Shana has been a valued member of the Screen Australia Legal team, having held the position of Senior Lawyer for more than five years. During this time, Shana has earned Screen Australia a long list of credits on complex film and TV investment deals. Shana too is a talented producer, having developed and produced titles such as Charlie & Boots.

Cathy Rodda is senior Development and Investment Manager at Film Victoria. Film Victoria is a state government agency that supports high quality, diverse and engaging screen content for Australian and International audiences, which will generate production activity and employment in Victoria. It does this in a range of ways, including providing development and production funding for film, television, online and VR, and through location assistance, filming incentives and key talent development. Cathy heads up a team of three working in production investment and is part of a wider group of industry-professional program managers. Prior to joining Film Victoria, Cathy produced feature films including the award winning Unfinished Sky and cult Sci Fi co-production Iron Sky.

Patrick joined Screen Australia in 2016 and works across policy projects, industry research and special reports such as Screen Currency: Valuing our Screen Industry and Seeing Ourselves: Reflections on diversity in Australian TV drama. Patrick has previously worked as a script and story analyst for Australian production companies and distributors, as a TV documentary and book researcher, and as a journalist for Fairfax and Rural Press.

Owen Johnston has worked for Screen Producers Australia for over a decade in both policy and industrial relations. Owen has produced feature films, documentaries, television drama, and commercials and is a former Director of Film Development and Marketing at the Australian Film Commission.
